Founded in 1994, the Dynamique Du Langage (DDL) research unit explores the interface between the diversity of the world’s languages and the universality of human linguistic capacity. Our research lies at the heart of major challenges of our times: from understanding language development in children and in language pathologies to issues of language documentation and vitality and the investigation of the origins of language. The research unit is structured around two research axes (DENDY and DILIS) and a transversal theme (COVALI).

AnaliDys and Dyslexia


Agnès Witko and her colleagues honored for their innovations in dyslexia treatment

On March 6, 2025, La Tribune de Lyon published an article about the work of Agnès Witko and her colleagues, Audrey Mazur and Matthieu Quignard, who are developing innovative tools to assist dyslexic patients. The article highlights the AnaliDys application and other Lyon-based advancements in this field.

AnaliDys Featured in CNRS Innovation

The AnaliDys application, developed by a Lyon-based team including Agnès Witko, Audrey Mazur, and Matthieu Quignard, has been highlighted in CNRS Innovation. This tool aims to enhance the analysis of written language disorders in dyslexic and dysorthographic patients and is designed for speech therapists.

Daniela Valente: European Doctor in Linguistics

On February 6, 2025, Daniela Valente was highlighted in the research news of Université Lumière Lyon 2 for earning a doctoral degree with the "European Doctor" label. Her thesis, titled “First-word acquisition in franco-lusophone bilinguals”, was defended in November 2024. During her doctorate, Daniela conducted a research stay at the University of Geneva between September and December 2018. Her defense included sessions in English, and two members of her jury came from European institutions in Lisbon and Malta.

Laurène Barbier: Doctoral Researcher in Linguistics and Zellidja Fellow

On February 18, 2025, Laurène Barbier was featured for her research stay in Tokyo, made possible by the Jean Walter Zellidja 2024 fellowship. Laurène, a doctoral student in linguistics at the Dynamique Du Langage laboratory, spent four months in Tokyo to advance her research. Back in early February 2025, she shares her experience and discusses her project supported by the National Agency for Research (ANR).

New Publication: A Landmark Volume on the Languages of the Central Andes


A collective volume edited by Matthias Urban!

The Oxford Guide to the Languages of the Central Andes (Oxford University Press) has been published on March 2, 2025.

This monumental volume, nearly 1000 pages long and in preparation since 2018, is the first to provide a comprehensive overview in English of the languages of the Central Andes. It includes:
  • In-depth descriptions of many understudied languages, written by international experts.
  • Typological analyses of specific linguistic phenomena.
  • Coverage of sociolinguistic and anthropological aspects of the region’s languages.
